How each input changes your payment
Small changes to any of these four inputs move the payment in predictable ways. Try them one at a time to see which matters most for your budget.
Interest rate
The rate is the biggest driver of total cost. The presets are typical starting points by credit tier, not quotes: your actual rate depends on the lender, your credit profile, the vehicle and the term.
Loan term
A longer term (up to 96 months) lowers each payment but adds interest overall. A shorter term costs less in total and builds equity faster.
Down payment
Every dollar you put down comes straight off the amount financed, which lowers both the payment and the interest. Starting with nothing down? Ask about $0-down options.
Trade-in value
A trade-in works like a down payment. Your dealer can apply its value straight to your new financing deal; if you still owe on it, that balance usually rolls into the new loan.
What the estimate does not include
The calculator works from the vehicle price you enter, between $1,000 and $250,000. A real financing quote adds a few items on top.
Sales taxes
GST applies to vehicle purchases, and provincial sales tax may also apply depending on your province and the vehicle.
Dealer and admin fees
Documentation, administration and delivery fees vary by dealer and are disclosed before you sign.
Insurance
Insurance is a separate cost, and lenders require coverage on a financed vehicle. We can even help set it up before delivery.
Warranties and add-ons
Optional protection products are never assumed here. If you add them, they increase the amount financed.
Calculator questions
What the estimate means, which rate and schedule to try, and how it relates to applying.
Is the calculator result an offer or an approval?
No. It is an estimate based only on the numbers you enter. Your actual rate, term and payment are set by the lender after reviewing your application, and all financing is subject to lender approval.
Monthly, bi-weekly or weekly: which should I pick?
The frequency changes how the same loan is split up, not how much vehicle you can afford, so pick the schedule that matches how you get paid.
Monthly (12 payments a year) is the simplest to budget around and the one most lenders quote by default. Bi-weekly (26 a year) lines up with many pay cycles, and each payment is a little less than half the monthly figure. Weekly (52 a year) is the smallest individual payment and trims a little off the total interest compared with monthly.
What interest rate should I use?
Start with the preset that best describes your credit and adjust from there. Rates vary by lender, credit history, vehicle and term, so try a range to see how sensitive the payment is. Your matched lender confirms your actual rate before you sign.
Should I pick the longest term to get the lowest payment?
Not automatically. A longer term lowers the payment but increases the total interest and keeps you in the loan longer. Compare the total cost across terms, and think about how long you plan to keep the vehicle.
Will applying affect my credit score?
No. The calculator never asks for personal information, and your initial pre-approval application uses a soft inquiry, which has no impact on your credit score. A hard inquiry is only run later — with your explicit consent — once you're matched with a lender.
What credit score do I need to qualify?
There's no hard minimum. We work with Canadians across every credit range — including bruised credit, past collections, and limited credit history. The best way to find out is to apply; the form takes two minutes and costs you nothing.
